Since the academic year 2013/14, the government provides additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding (provided jointly by the Departments for Education; Health and Culture, and Media and Sport) is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to choose how they do this. As a school we chose to involve the children in the choices we have made and conducted a PE questionnaire. This was carried out during the allocation of funding to ensure we targeted these improvements in the subject based on pupil voice. The children stated many ways that they wanted to enhance PE in our school, including: experiencing new sports, keeping fit, developing their own skills, meeting athletes and learning from skilled professionals.
